Cold, Flu and a Whole lot of Symptoms

With the current issues of the pandemic, it can be hard to remember that there are still plenty of other viruses and bacteria that will make you and your family sick. And of course, just to make any mom even more paranoid we can actually get more than one illness together. Lots of times a virus will allow a secondary bacterial infection to take over our bodies- a sort of opportunistic bacteria leading to lots of residual symptoms even after the illness has come and gone- examples include

bronchitis, lingering cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches and even reactive air way disease.

Several years ago after a particularly stressful time for our family, I got a severe cold and after it went away I was left with a persistent cough and asthmatic attacks that were very frequent. After over a month of symptoms, I finally took myself to my doctor to rule out pneumonia (it turns out that listening to your own lungs is a real challenge with a stethoscope). Well I didn’t have pneumonia but I did have something called Reactive Airway Disease and the symptoms are asthmatic cough and it can last 6-12 months. Thankfully it didn’t’ get last for a full 12 months.

So what do you do when there is all this out there to get you?

Keeping your immune system healthy and also getting over an illness is important so here are my families tips.

Illness Prevention:

1. Vitamin D3 5,000iu daily from October to March

2. Zinc 10 mg daily

3. Vitamin C 1000mg daily

4. Multi-vitamin

Illness Recovery:

  1. Zinc 23mg every 2 hours

  2. Acer Campestrae 1 tbsp 3x a day

  3. Elderberry 1 tbsp every 3 hours

  4. Vitamin C 3,000 mg split into multiple dosages

If this is not helping, make sure to consult your holistic practitioner who can make an herbal biotic or anti-viral tincture. Mixes are custom made to the symptoms you or your family are experiencing. These mixes are helpful since they also don’t disrupt the intestinal flora like a classic antibiotic and as a mom I love that so I don’t have to spend weeks or months rebuilding our families gut flora.
